Slow Down Ageing

Does Botox Work

With all the insanity about people getting Botox injections for all kind of problems ranging from a droopy eyelid to a sagging chin, one has to wonder what Botox does and how it works.  In order to understand exactly how Botox treatments function, one has to inquire first into the amazing miracles of modern science.

Botox basically comes from botulinum toxins, which were discovered and researched upon in the ‘60s, and its original purpose was to help treat various neurological diseases.  In 1989 Botox was approved by the FDA for treating eye muscle disorders such as uncontrollable blinking, crossed eyes, strabismus, blepharospasm and even wrinkles, then in 2000 it received approval to treat cervical dystonia.  While doing further research, doctors realized that Botox had a softening effect on the frown lines on the forehead.  It was this discovery that radically changed anti-ageing treatments as Botox came into existence and FDA approved it in 2002.

Now Botox comes in whenever people want to reduce the wrinkles caused by years and years of muscle contractions, which take place every time we smile, laugh, frown, or do any other kind of movement with our facial muscles.  Also known as mechanical damage, the wear and tear produced by making these expressions starts to be noticeable over the years, as the lines become permanent.  When this happens, no kind of cream can reduce them.  At this point Botox can help by temporarily paralyzing these muscles so that one cannot make these facial expressions any longer.

So how are Botox treatments performed?  Basically these procedures consist in injecting small amounts of Botox into the muscles, where it blocks nerve impulses that lead to a weakening of the muscles that cause wrinkles.  After doing more such injections over a period of several months, wrinkles start to soften and in many cases even disappear completely.  Botox can be injected in many areas of the face, where the muscles are known to cause wrinkles such as crow’s feet, frown lines or forehead lines.

Botox injections, however, do come with some side-effects, like any other treatment.  Some of the notable side effects which have been registered include a feeling of soreness where the injection was done, difficulty swallowing, blurry vision, headaches and/or a dry mouth.  Yet, for a toxin, a professional Botox treatment has surprisingly few side-effects in comparison with other medications people have used to obtain the same effects.
